Straight up... I'm a fan of Hammer Nutrition products. It took me a few years to get on board but once I did I haven't looked back. When I first heard about the fuel of choice in an easy to use tablet I was excited of the possibilities for my running and cycling activities. Hammer has long been a world wide choice for multi-hour fuels with natural ingredients and Perpetuem leads the way. Normally Perpetuem is consumed either in a water bottle (not bad if your on a bike) or mixed into a pan cake type paste and carried in a smaller flask (this is my preferred choice of use). But the interest of a smaller tablet to carry that is not effected by heat or time intrigued me (the down side to using a flask/bottle is a max usage time 5 plus hours depending on temperature).

Like most products I test, I'll sample them before an activity. My initial taste test of the Strawberry Vanilla flavor was noticing the large size of the tablet, not like the Smarites Candy I was hoping for but more like a couple of Alka Seltzer tablets stuck together. I noticed the flavor was good like all Hammer products, mild and not too strong however the almost chalky feel and powder texture soon left my mouth very dry. That said I was not willing to give up on the idea of an easy to carry unit of sustained energy.

My first outing with the new Solid was an early morning trail run in the wind and with my wife. An hour into the run I reached for my first tablet, the size was not as bad as I had anticipated but still a bit large for the likes of me. Once I started chewing I reached for a sip of water, make sure H2O is close at hand, then the ease of getting the fuel down was a bit simpler. I did notice an almost pasty texture getting stuck on my teeth. Hammer recommends 1-4 tablets per hour (based on other calorie intake). I would not want to consume the tablets during high output or heart rate periods in fear of choking. I thought my wife who loves Perpetuem would appreciate the tablet and ease of the product but her first bite was her last... too big and too chalky. For me the overall result of Perpetuem was the same as a flask/bottle, no stomach issues and a sustained energy.

The Solids can be purchased in a reusable 6 tablet container ($3.95) or a large 90 tablet ($36.95) container in 3 tasty flavors; Strawberry Vanilla, Orange Vanilla or Caffe Late flavors.

I recommend the product for race days and ultra training. The ease is not worth the large tablet or dry powder in your mouth for your mid range activities less then 3 hours when regular Perpetuem will not go bad. Stick to mixing the powder Perpetuem when time is on your side but for the mid range miles/time and ease of use the Solids will provide the energy to finish strong. My recommendation to Hammer Nutrition: Make them a bit smaller and thus easier to consume (assuming a gel type tablets can not be produced without preservatives) then we can just chew more tablets instead of one big one.

I call it "enthusiasm." In front of me at the local bagel shop was a 12 year old ready to ski. He hopped of the car with his jacket zipped up, hood on and ski boots buckled. He was only a smear of cream cheese and 34 miles from Beaver Mountain ski resort but ready to ride.

The night was very informative with had tuning, edge filling and waxing the skis. Thanks to Tom for his time and knowledge.

Turkey Day at the Beav

Thanks to a couple grandmothers who wanted to see their granddaughter, I found myself in Cache Valley (up from Phoenix) over Thanksgiving. It's been a long time since I've seen so much snow, especially on Thanksgiver. We arrived Thanksgiving morning and it took all of a couple hours before I looked at my brothers and said, "What are we waiting for?" We loaded up the truck and headed up the canyon. After a failed attempt at Tony Grove we headed up to Beaver, where some groomed runs made for easier hiking. We didn't have the gumption to hike to the steepest stuff (using the term "steep" lightly), and it turns out it is good to wax your board every couple years, but hey...we were sliding on frozen water and I was as happy as I've been in a long time (I seriously almost cried, it felt so good to be in the cold on the snow)...

A day later we were back up, debating whether to climb forever for a few turns or build a jump like we did when we were 16. We went for the jump. Again, willingness to hike limited our spots, but we managed to build a fun smallish step-up thing that still gave us that little feeling in our gut. My camera battery died before we started getting super extreme on the jump...I promise! 14 years later, it's as fun as it ever was.

Here's hoping for a Christmas Break sequel...

The Finish. A LoToJa 2010 Perspective

The Finish

What does it take to finish? That question has rolled through my mind during the summer of ’10 as my wife Shelly and I trained for LoToJa, a 206 mile bike ride from Logan, Utah To Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It takes training, miles and miles. It takes fuel and hydration. It takes determination and belief in the goal. Life is similar to the bike ride. Life has ups and downs, takes training to achieve goals and isn’t always easy but in the end we hope the finish is worthwhile.

Our day’s life started with a 4am alarm. We registered in the “fun ride” group. The folks who named it fun ride defiantly have a sense of humor. I left with Shelly and her friend Brandi from the house in the dark early hours of the morning with bike lights shining. We met other riding partners, Paul Badger who was riding the 206 miles for the 4th time and new comers Allyson and Chandler Reed. Ryan Reed was burned a week before in a house boat accident so he called to see if Ally and son Chandler could tag along. No problem if they wanted to go slow.

I was hoping to leave with the first group at 5:45 but jumped in the second group of about 50 riders leaving at 5:48. Our starting temperature of 38 degrees was a bit cold on a bike. The first 34 miles follow country roads through Cache Valley to Preston Idaho. Paul and I were in the front all the way. My goal was to not ride hard the first section and make sure we didn’t over do ourselves early in the day. (I think that paid off) Just out of Trenton the temperature dropped to about 29 degrees and we all felt the cold bite through our layers. Our fingers were semi functional as we rolled into our first stop in Preston and I was having trouble squeezing the water bottle. My brother Bill has supported family riders for years at this stop. Thanks to him for all he support. I thought how important family and friends are along life’s journey.

Life has many ups and downs. Our first up is Strawberry Canyon climbing to 7424 feet. Our goal was to climb at our own pace and wait for each other at the neutral feed zone near the top. Shelly dropped a chain before the climb and it took a few minutes to get it back on. Paul continued with Chandler rolling to the top. We would not see Paul again during the day. We traded Paul for Barry Noorda who was at the neutral feed and had left with another group 3 minutes before us at the start. Some of us suffered from the cold and hard climb much like trails in life. Some struggle with school, careers, (some of us more then others) or maybe health. Who said life was easy?

As our group of 6 rolled over the top and toward Montpelier we passed many riders and were making great time. Other riders jumped on behind us but no effort from anyone to help me work in the front. That was alright because my days goal was to get Shelly to the finish and I was prepared to stay out front in the wind all day. Like life sometimes we work for others, sometimes we help others and sometimes we need the help of others. There are so many people through the years who have sacrificed their time to benefit me. Later on the day I reflected how my previous years ride was very difficult as I road so many of the miles by myself. I started to think how much more enjoyable this day was riding with friends and my wife. That’s life. Being with others and helping others is important to me.

Leaving Montpelier the route climbs up a canyon to the base of another mountain pass. Geneva summit rises 6923 feet and we climb 1,000 feet in nine miles to the top. We all settled into our own pace and regrouped on top. Dropping down the other side is always more fun to work with gravity and not against. The road winds its way up Salt River canyon where I experienced my first leg cramp of the day. I had to pull over stretch off my bike while the others kept riding. Shelly waited for me and we had a fun ride up the road together for several miles. At 106 miles another feed zone rests at the bottom of Salt River Pass. We regrouped there and got ready for the last of 3 climbs. Salt River rises 1,300 feet in 11 miles with a 7 percent grade the last 3 miles and tops out at 7,360 feet. Barry was not in the best of condition and was having a hard time eating and drinking so he told us to go ahead without him. This section I thought about how sometimes life hits us with obstacles. My legs were feeling the effects of a long day but it is how we continue life’s road that determines our finish.

Dropping off Salt River pass is always exhilarating. My fasted recorded speed was off that summit a few years back. Today I only hit 49 mph and Shelly hit her highest clocked speed of 42 mph. Yes I know, somebody has more weight and can descend faster. At the bottom we got on with another husband and wife team and a bonus tail wind. I stayed behind the two until Afton. I was very appreciative as we chatted going into Afton and I thanked the guy who was from Bozeman Montana. The tail wind and his effort gave me a much needed rest.

My least favorite section of the ride is the 34 miles between Afton and Alpine in Star Valley. It’s a rolling hilly section usually with a head wind. By this time my shoulders ache and I’m not feeling the best. We had a little head wind but I suffered with leg cramps again and twice had to get off to stretch. As mentioned before I've struggled during these miles in years past but today I was with others and almost enjoyed the section for the first time. I was exhausted from the 160 plus miles but thoughts of life's challenges emotionally drained me as I reflected on family and life and somehow was fueled to ride on from those thoughts. My last cramp 5 miles out of Alpine made the last 10 mile section seem longer than any other. We rolled into Alpine ready for our final push to the finish.

The ride up Snake River canyon is always a pleasant ride even after already logging 160 miles. As we started the final section our spirits strengthened and we all had an adrenaline rush, so much so, we rolled past the final feed zone and kept rolling toward the finish. The coolness of the canyon, the beauty of the Snake River and the bordering pine covered mountains fueled my senses.

After 180 miles and all day on a bike I start to think of the day. The day was filled with ups and downs and a bit longer then I wanted but the snow capped Tetons were shadowing the finish and I was pleased with our effort. With 10 miles left Shelly rolled to the side of me and said, “Let’s get this party over with.” I was glad she was ready to finish strong, I’m not sure I was. I started to think about how we finish our day and how we finish our life. The two have a strong bond for me this summer. The trials of the day mixed with pain and pleasure but joy and happiness with family and friends reflected in my mind.

I burned about 14,000 calories during the day. A lot of food and water is consumed riding 206 miles. My daughter Sam and friend Lexi drove the course stopping at the feed zones, filling the bottles of ice water, bringing the food labeled for each stop; cold pizza, pb&j, rice crispy treats, hammer gel and perpetuam, string cheese, boiled eggs and more. Shelly over prepares but wants choices because we never know what will sound good. I have a lot of support teams in life. Many family members, friends, coworkers and others have helped me along life’s way. I've never received more text messages, emails and calls congratulating me with an event. I think the messages were more dirrected to Shelly but I'll still take them.

I'm forever grateful for those who have pulled me in my life. Thankful for the examples, sacrifices and hard work done on my behalf so I can enjoy this ride through life. I love you Dad, you finished strong. You finished well.

The finish; yes others were faster, yes there are things we could do different to better our time(like being faster at the feed zones) but we did what we did. Like life we can always improve our decisions but at the end of the day we live our lives and we shouldn't second guess our successes. I wouldn't change anything during the long day. Yes, we found the finish.

Is Recovery the Best Part of Fitness?

Over the years my bicycle rides and pounding the pavement on my feet have turned into a lab of testing energy nutrition from a menu of fuels packed with carbohydrates, electrolytes, a blend of protein and whatever else the manufactures think my slow body needs. Today was no different. In short: Hammer Chocolate Recoverite mixed with cold non fat milk is freakin tasty for a post exercise beverage.

Now for the longer version that you can skip. The cast: my wife Shelly and her friend Brandi along with Dr. Barry Noorda OBGYN (no relation to Norda's Inc. but a fine customer none the less) who is my personal Gynecologist. I try to never leave home without one because I never know when I may need some treatment or an exam. Barry was due in the office so he kept his miles short and turned around a third into the ride. The girls and I were riding the Tour De Wellsville’s* a 80 mile loop located in Northern Utah with a couple climbs.

On the back side of the ride the road rolls through small farm towns with a few ups and downs. The wind was favorable and the temperature still had not climbed to unbearable July heat. We saw a few other cyclists enjoying the morning vistas but for the most part traffic was minimal and we had the two lane country road to ourselves. We pedaled into Brigham City ready to fill our water bottles and decided hash browns with a Dr Pepper chaser at McDonalds would only help further our energy testing for the big climb ahead.

Brigham City sleeps at 4400 feet, the canyon climbs through a winding four-lane road passing through the small town of Mantua at 5200 then steps up the climb to summit just over 6000 feet. All of this beauty radiates in the Cache National Forest. Just out of Mantua Shelly and I spotted a red fox who appeared to be looking from the brush for a good time to cross the road. I wanted to tell him there were too many cars but I’m not sure he would of listened.

I think, therefore I... (fill in the blank). Today I will fill in with "trip." Going on a trip can be an exciting adventure to a place far away or around the corner close to your back yard. A trip can be months, weeks or maybe a few short hours. Trips can take your body places you dream about while letting your mind carry you to a place away from the frustrations of daily work and stress. Family trips can be full of fun and frustration like our recent trip to Arches National Park. Another trip can be like good friend currently in Africa on a humanitarian medical trip with his family. How lucky is he to spend time helping others and allowing his kids to learn a cultural life changing experience. However, today I will focus not on the outside pleasures of the world but the joys found close to home in my back yard.

The alarm was set for 5:30 on a crisp Saturday morning. My wife was getting up early for the annual Little Red Riding Hood all women bike ride around the rolling country roads of Cache Valley. I turned over for a few more minutes of sleep before crawling out of bed in preparation for a local trip to the stunningly steep Dry Canyon trail. My wife and I finished our preparations for our morning activities together in the kitchen. I was busy mixing some Hammer Perpetuem to keep me fulled for a few hours and Shelly was filling her water bottle with the same and another with her favorite hydrating concoction, Camelbak Elixir. We ate a light breakfast and said our goodbyes. Shelly left with her road bike as I left with my trail running shoes.

I set out for a mile warm up run on the flat base of Logan Peak rising 5,000 feet above my home. I turned right to start the very steep accent up the canyon. My goal was not to summit today but to change from the city streets I run to the trials and nature I love. The previous days rain had left the earth soft and damp. The trail was loose gravel and soft dirt. "Wow (breath)... "this" (breath)... "is" (breath).... "steep" (breath)... I hiked this trail many times but today I was trying to maintain a quicker pace however my jog turned into a brisk walk and spurts of a slow jog. Soon I was to the snow line in the canyon. I stopped to look down into the valley with the morning clouds below me and the rising sun warming the valley floor. I listened to the birds and the light breeze moving the pine trees. The smell of crisp pine, melting snow and fresh mountain air filled my expanded lungs as thoughts of a beautiful world ran through my mind. "How lucky am I?" This was turning into a splendid June morning trip.

I continued up the trail stepping aside for the only other human I would see on the trail. He was on his way down the trail as we exchanged greetings. He looked fast, I didn't. I continued on a now snow covered trail following fresh tracks and several older tracks. Soon I was 4 miles up the trial at the junction where the trail splits. To the south, snow covered the trail so I headed north on the southwestern facing slope wet from melting snow but cleared from the winter's blanket. I filled a water bottle at a brisk running spring. The water was cool and clear. It tasted so good. Now at my turn around point close to 9,000 feet I gazed at the valley floor thinking about my wife riding her bike and enjoying her Saturday trip.

Like most trips there is a time to return home. Running down the trail is easier on my lungs but my legs quickly felt the fatigue of the climb up. Snow always brings a smile to my face and soon I forget about the hard effort of the ascent and the pain in my legs. My feet were wet and cold as I slid on the firm snow. I made a quick detour following the wrong set of tracks but realized my mistake before bushwhacking back to the main trial. Soon after I left the snowy trail I stopped to empty my shoes with a few little rocks and tighten my laces. I could feel my feet slipping and didn't want to return with blistered feet. I was back running on the soft trail again, picking up speed and lost in tranquility with the sounds on my iPod. I recalled when I was in neighboring Logan Canyon trail running. Everything was jake running along the ragging river before I landed splat on my face, chest, and legs. This was a trip created from a small rock catching the toe of my shoe and sending me falling to the earth with a splat. A real trip.

No sooner then I was recalling this fond memory and laughing about it I caught the toe of my right shoe on the side hill. A trip. Not a trip to Africa, no kids in the car yelling at each other and nothing like a trip around the valley on a bike. One step and I'm alright. Second step and I'm going to pull this off. Third step and I'm getting worried. Forth step and I am going down. The fifth step sent me to the side hill's soft dirt. I almost pulled it out. I thought about a previous trip, therefore I tripped.

Years of skiing have taught me one thing about falling. Tuck and roll. Don't try to stop the falling nature of force. As I went down with my hands out and my shoulder tucked in I absorbed the fall high up on a mountain trail. After a quick survey of myself I realized despite a water bottle being ejected from my belt, dirt on my Smith sunglasses, my earphones pulled from my ear, and mud from my ankle to my face I was alright. No injury today. I stood up making sure no other human was laughing at the cascading crash. Realising I was by myself I replaced my Skullcandy earphones and started back on the trail home.

I felt great running into the culdesac where we live, a muddied ego but alright. Returning home after a "trip" one can always say there is no place like home. I think about good things in life; my family, cold fresh mountain spring water, and my ability to savor activities like skiing, biking and running. These are the things I love. Maybe, just maybe, I think, therefore I love.

Ted Ligety kicked off the 2010 Olympic season with an impressive second-place Giant Slalom podium finish during the first World Cup in Soelden, Austria on Sunday. This is the third year in a row Ligety has finished on the podium in Soelden.

“This is the toughest year I’ve raced in Soelden. Today was super bumpy and pretty variable snow. I was psyched to make it down and get second, so it was definitely a good day. I’m super psyched with how I am skiing and it’s a good way to start out the season,” Ligety said.

One of the best things about working at a ski/snowboard shop is I get to try out all of the gear the season before it's released. The snowboards I am most amped on is Lib Techs line-up.

The Dark Series has a new camber story for the 2010 season. It's called C2 Banana. C2 offers the best of both worlds of banana rocker in between your feet and of camber under your both feet. Riding this board you could really feel the difference at high speed bombing groomers flat based it is a lot more stable than a board with just banana. But because of the banana it is still a poppy fun board to ride. And with the Magne-Traction the edge hold is beyond amazing. This is going to be the board I am going to ride next season.

Another board I might have to get for next season is Banana Magic. This board really is magic. This board is super poppy and with the magical mystery sidecut it is super fun to carve. You can totally lay-out you heel edge turns like a surfer railing his bottom turn. This is also very environmentally friendly because in place of fiberglass it has an all basalt construction I think this adds to it poppyness. I know it's summer but when you get a chance you really need to try this board out it will change your life.

Name of Product: Alpine Ski Bindings

Units: About 125,000 (an additional 1.0 million were sold outside the U.S.)

Manufacturer: Atomic Skis GmbH, of Austria

Hazard: The heel housing of the bindings can crack, causing the binding to release unexpectedly. This can cause the skier to lose control or fall and suffer injuries.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received four reports of injuries, including a concussion and injuries to the shoulder and knee from falls.

Description: The recall affects the heel components of the following Atomic alpine ski bindings: Race 310, Race 412, RaceRace 310, RaceRace 412, Xentrix 310, Xentrix 311, Xentrix 412, C310, C311, C412, CR 310, CR 412, R 310, R 412, SX 310, SX 412, Device 311, Device 412, Centro 310, Centro 412, and Dynamic ADX 312, RD10, X412, Centro 412. The recall includes only those bindings manufactured from 1998 through 2002 The year of manufacture can be located on the underside of the heel lever. Sold at: Authorized Atomic USA ski dealers nationwide from 1998 through 2005 for between $150 and $350.

The secret stash on the backside of our local Beaver Mountain offered up some of the best turns of my life this past week. With reported 8" new the day before and 19" the day of, I think on top it was more like 36"+.

Review: The Giro Manifest goggles proved to be excellent optics when the snow was or wasn't in my face. The Manifest didn't fog at all while being blasted by snow. Although the Giro Bluetooth/Motorola system attached to the Giro G10 helmet kept me insinc with my iPhone and tunes my heart was doing a better job keeping the beat alive. Powder rating: 5 out of 5 Dr. Peppers

my suprise ski pick of the year - Review: Surface Life Life 2

I can face the fact I'm a bit old school.... It's hard for me to keep up with my teen age daughter down a race hill and I don't even try to hang with my boy in the park. So when you ask me to ride rockered, reversed camber, ultra fat and wacked out ski shapes I kinda shrug my nose. I was mighty sceptical when I jumped on a pair of Surface Life Life 2 skis. The pre-bent tip and tail (3 Stage Rocker Technology) offer a great ride in the powder if you are going forward or switch and the wood core gives the ski it's "life" and quick response.

What impressed me most about these fine engineered boards is the ability to still hold a reasonable amount of edge and control on the firm snow. Face it, most fat skis rock in the deep stuff but if we are not riding the helli bottom to top every run some of the time we are traversing, skiing to the lift and not in the soft stuff. Plus one may want to drop into the park while riding these boards.
I am still old and prefer the more back mounting or as the graphic says "there" instead of the center "here" mounting. With the ease of the bent shape a more back mount fills like you still have some ski under foot. Those of you who plan to land or take off not seeing what's ahead will love the centered mount.

One ski for racing groomers and busting crud. Review: Dynastar Contact 4x4

With a lack of snow early in the local Wasatch Mountain of Utah my pick of the month for a ski would be the Dynastar Contact 4x4 Ski. Deep powder days are not too fare off but without more big dumps a ski that switches favorite conditions is a great option for all skiers. This race chassis ski was built for speed with a bonus.

Skiers like myself who enjoy ripping a groomer switching form SL turns to GS turns with a few straight lines in between will find excitement in this high energy ski that will go off piste with a bang. A wider foot than most race skis, 75mm, and a 16m @ 178cm radius gives this high energy ski a pop in-and-out of crud and powder. Like an Escalade driving downtown Friday night the 4X4 switches to off road pleasure all weekend.

The Dynastar Contact 4x4 Ski comes equipped with a PX14 TI Binding, Sidecut: 122-75-106mm Sizes: 158, 165, 172, 178, 184cm, Skill level: Advanced/Expert. When I made a few turns on these skis I remebered why I like to ski, for FUN!!! Make sure you get on a pair this season, if not, you'll be one year older when you do. tomE

Review: Dynastar Legend Pro XXL

My XXL

One advantage (among many) to working at a ski shop is being around all the new gear every year. Another perk is actually testing some of the product. Every season around February manufactures of skis and snowboards get together for an on snow demo and allow shop employees to test the next season gear. For the past few years this has happened in our back door at Snowbasin, Utah. (It doesn't get much better than The Basin but please don't believe us and stay out of our lines)

Last year with a few inches of new snow on top of more new snow we had a couple great days riding some of the fatter ski models. The Dynastar Legend Pro XXL 187cm (132 - 109 - 122) was under my boots for a couple runs. What a ski! Up front I have been a bit old school on the width of my skis. I have skied all my life and have never been afraid of size until width came into the game. I love ripping down a groomer but thrill at speed floating in powder too. Big turns, big speed and a big smile. Even during the high school and junior high days I was on the longest skis of my friends and in most cases I still am (I tower at 5'6 3/4"). Back in the 90's while ski patrolling at the local mountain I loved to straight line 213cm Super G Skis with my favorite neon one piece suit. I never have skied with my legs together like some of the old duffers so please give me some credit. Anyway, I digress....

Back to the story: Now with more side cut and better materials, wider skis seem to have a carving sensation even in the softer snow which pleases me and the Dynastar Legend Pro XXL is no exception. Rolling a ski on an edge is not common with the youth of today but I just can't stop it. The day was sunny with a few high mountain clouds rolling off Ogden Peak. It had already been a fantastic day with a great lunch. After lunch two epic runs on the XXL down John Paul, with a couple new friends of the industry, found myself in paradise. Never before had a ski with a width of more than 87mm come to life for me. The XXL's 109mm waist gave me more float in and out of the 16" fresh snow and packed down crud. The race room built ski still performed like a race ski, the faster the better, but it was quick in and out of the trees and sent me flying down the hill. At one point I was caught in the back seat as I came around a few trees and a skier was down hill resting in my line. Because of the XXL energy I was able to toss the normally large heavy skis around like a pair of park skis to avoid hitting the wide mouth skier. This was when I fell in love with the ski and said, "I will have a pair of these in my quiver next year."

The other surprise was how the ski handled on the groomers going to the powder and then to the life line. Most wider skis just don't have enough radius or energy in the skis to make them tolerable when you are not in the deep snow. Face it, at a typical resort much of the run is going to and getting from the powder on a groomed trail or traverse, another reason I have not liked many fatter skis. The XXL never left me skidding a turn or wanting a 213 Super G. This ski is not for the timid or skid-turning short ski skier. I road the 187cm and it was more than enough ski for my 165 lb. frame but the ski also comes in the mammoth 194cm edition. The faster you go the XXL will come alive and give you more in return. tomE

Norda's had 17+ riders enjoy this years longest one day USCF-sanctioned bike race in the US. Our fastest rider this year was John Emmett taking 3rd in CAT 5 25+ 1600s group, finishing the 206 miles in 10 hours 20 minutes. Nicely done John!

A little summer fun...

In early July I was lucky enough to escape Arizona for a couple of weeks and come up North. Near the top of my list was a gang of biking. Soon after arriving in Logan I hit up Norda's to borrow the bike stand and do some much needed tuning, retrieve a bag of bike goodies that Tom ordered for me, and throw together a new hardtail DJ bike for Dave. Then it was on like the prom. Here's a little video of our exploits...

Skiing the Arabian Desert at Dubai

My brother Chad was able to ski the desert magic of Dubai. Could I be more jealous??? (Only if is was an 18" day at Snowbasin - but still this is on the list of things to do in my life).

Ski Dubai is an indoor ski resort. For $50 Chad got two hours of skiing, boots, poles, pants and jacket (no gloves or hats-- Chad thought he was tough but it was pretty cold) . A woman from the Philippines help Chad get rent his clothing, an Egyptian man helped him with equipment and lift attendants were from India and Bulgaria. Chad rode up on the lift with someone from Ireland, England and Alabama.

Road tires at 120 psi. + turn + gravel = sting in the shower

A bit of road carnage: The truck did stop but pulled out a bit more than I expected so the left turn was forced wide on my road bike and I found a patch a gravel. I wasn't even going that fast but just the wrong mix at the wrong time. The driver made sure I was alright and very nice. I told him only my pride was hurt. The worst part is the scratch and small dent on my Dura Ace shifters... that doesn't heal itself.

2008 Spring Schedule:

Congratulations to the Tram and Lifts crew and Doppelmayr CTEC on the early completion of their Tram maintenance project. Snowbird will resume offering skiing and riding from the Tram and extend the ski season through Father’s Day, June 15, conditions permitting. As a result, the Peruvian chairlift and tunnel are now closed for the winter season.

June 9 through June 12
Ski area is closed during weekdays. We will re-open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, conditions permitting.

June 13 through June 15
Open lifts (9 am – 3 pm): The Tram, Mineral Express and Little Cloud. Scenic Tram rides available until 8 p.m. (no skis or boards allowed). Closed Lifts: Peruvian Express, Gadzoom, Chickadee, Wilbere, Baby Thunder, Gad II, Mid-Gad and Baldy Express. This is the final scheduled weekend of skiing and riding for the 2007/08 season. Additional weekends of skiing MAY be added, conditions permitting. The Tram will start a summer schedule on June 13, conditions permitting.

I've always said I would start road biking after I got too old and scared to DH and freeride, but this is giving me second thoughts. A drunk hit the group of racers in Monterrey Mexico. Pretty messed up and pretty crazy picture.

Anyway, my name's Brigham, Tom asked me to throw some stuff on here from time to time. I've been a Norda's crony for a long time...I'll do some nostalgic posts about the old days and you'll see what I mean.

Sam (Samantha) Emmett is Norda's Speed Racer

Sam Emmett took to the race course this year for her first ski racing season. Sam joined the Snow Basin Alpine Ski Team and raced the Intermountain South Series. At age 15, racing as a first year J-2, Sam finished strong with several podium finishes including 1st overall at the South Series Championships on her home course at Snow Basin, Utah with Gold Medal SL and GS races.

Sam was awarded "Rookie of the Year" for the SnowBasin Alpine Ski Team. Other accomplishments include solid finishes at a number of JO qualifying races including a 69 point finish on the GS course to help qualify her for the Western Region FIS Finals, Park City, Utah. Another highlight for Sam was racing at the Loveland Derby, Colorado with strong finishes to end the year on a positive note. Nicely done Sam!

Rockered skis

Well my friend and I wanted to rocker some skis so we went down to Norda's and tom let us use his heat gun. The way we did it was we got a heat gun and a ski pole and we heated the area where the pole was for 5 mins. Then we did it on the other side. Then we moved the ski pole down and repeated the process then we let it cool down... and it worked and they stayed rockered here are some pics

But then we tried the tails and we kind of screwed one of the skis up. Overall our experiment turned out better than we expected.
